Animal Admissions Requirements

Birds (except poultry)
Cattle (including bison, water buffalo, and yak)
Dogs and Cats
Goats and Sheep
Horses
Other Ruminants (such as alpacas, llamas, camels,
and deer)

Poultry (chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, ratites, and
game birds such as quail or partridge)

Primates (monkeys and apes)
Swine (including pet pigs)
All other Animals

In addition to the requirements listed through the above links, all hoofed animals coming from a state where Vesicular Stomatitis has been diagnosed since April 15, 2012 (currently New Mexico) are subject to the restrictions listed on the Vesicular Stomatitis Proclamation, issued by the Virginia State Veterinarian.  This proclamation states that:

  1. No hoofed animal may enter the Commonwealth of Virginia which originates from a premises where vesicular stomatitis has been diagnosed since April 15, 2012.
  1. All hoofed animals entering the Commonwealth of Virginia from a state in which vesicular stomatitis has been diagnosed since April 15, 2012 shall be examined by an accredited veterinarian to determine whether they are free from signs of vesicular stomatitis within five days prior to arrival into the Commonwealth of Virginia, and shall be accompanied by a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection upon which the animals are identified by any official United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved identification and bearing the following written statement signed by that accredited veterinarian:

“All animals identified on this Certificate of Veterinary Inspection have been examined by me and found to be free from signs of vesicular stomatitis. Owner-provided history indicates that during the past 30 days, these animals have neither been exposed to vesicular stomatitis nor been located on a premises quarantined for vesicular stomatitis.”

Photo of calf.Effective January 18, 2012 Virginia has new regulations governing the entry of animals into the Commonwealth.  These regulations are in place to protect the health of Virginia’s animal populations, and to ensure that Virginia animals can enter other states and countries with minimum requirements.
