REGULATORY SERVICES
The National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) originated in the early 1930s as a program to eradicate Salmonella pullorum from the commercial poultry industry. As a program sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), NPIP now covers the commercial and small flock producers for diseases such as Avian Influenza, Avian Mycoplasmas, Pullorum, and more. Producers can use their NPIP membership to reassure their flock’s health status, use it as a marketing strategy, reduce testing frequency, and more. Staff members with the Virginia Department of Agriculture (VDACS) assist producers in enrolling poultry flocks in NPIP and maintaining their status through testing.
